The faculty for this course includes experienced instructors from Alaska and the Lower 48, who are leading thinkers and practitioners in their field, and includes:
Wanetta Ayers serves as the director of the Office of Economic Development at the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community & Economic Development, where she oversees development efforts for the tourism, timber, film, small business, fisheries, and minerals sectors.
Wanetta has a long history of involvement in tourism, fisheries, and economic and community development work around the state. Previously, she was executive director of the Western Alaska Community Development Association, a nonprofit trade organization that serves as the Western Alaska Community Development Quota program administrative panel. Wanetta has 27 years of management experience, and has worked extensively with elected officials, governing boards, and senior management to implement public policy and programs designed to stimulate economic activity, create jobs, and improve the quality of life in urban and rural communities.
Prior to her work with the Western Alaska Community Development Association, Wanetta served as executive director of the Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference. Before that, she held business development positions with the Kenai Peninsula Borough and Afognak Native Corporation. She has a master’s degree in business administration.
Gabriel Layman is a lifelong Alaskan who graduated from Palmer High School in 1997. In 2001, he received a B.A. in Government from the College of William and Mary in Virginia and subsequently attended law school at Penn State University, where he earned the William H. Dodd Prize and the Conrad A. and Rocco C. Falvello Memorial Award. After receiving his law degree, Gabe returned to Alaska and went to work for the Palmer Senior Citizens Center as an advocate for older Alaskans. He passed the Alaska Bar Exam in February 2005 and in 2007 went to work for Cook Inlet Housing Authority, the largest of Alaska’s regional housing authorities. As Corporate Counsel, Gabe plans and directs Cook Inlet Housing Authority’s corporate legal affairs and is a key member of the organization’s leadership team. During summer months, he spends much of his free time boating in Prince William Sound and repairing his boat on the frequent occasions when it breaks down. His passion is community activism, and he remains involved in the non-profit field and local government issues on a volunteer basis.
Jim Mooney has a wealth of business experience resulting from over 25 years serving customers in both the private and public sectors. He has developed an expertise for organizational start-ups and turn-arounds, giving him first hand experience at making a new business a successful venture. He also specialized in business attraction efforts that provided him the opportunity to travel and interact with customers in the American, European, and Asian economic sectors. Jim has successfully sited projects ranging from $100,000 to $1,000,000,000 in investment.

Jim has his first Masters Degree in Development Administration from Michigan State University, and he is working on a second Masters Degree in Business Administration from the Keller Graduate School of Management. In addition, he is the recipient of numerous awards and certifications, among which are:

- Marketing Materials Awards (AEDC – 5 times)

He has published six books: Doing the Deal – A Developer’s Guide to Effective Incentive Utilization, The Race to Recruit, Learning to Lead, Building the Base, Community Wisdom II, and Economic Development Methods and Strategies, as well as numerous articles that have appeared in trade and professional publications. Jim is a member of the faculty at the Economic Development Institute and he also is a guest instructor in deal-negotiating, financing and marketing classes at five university located throughout the United States.
Michael Orr is a Vice-President with the Alaska Commercial Banking Group of Wells Fargo Bank. He is originally from Western Alaska, and has an MBA from Alaska Pacific University and a BA in Economics from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
Udaya Patnaik is a founder and principal of Jump Associates, a hybrid strategy firm focused on helping companies grow. He helps clients manage innovation, create and commercialize new businesses, and transform organizations. Udaya uses skills in systems thinking, facilitation and roadmapping to advise executives in technology, healthcare, consumer packaged goods, philanthropy and retail. Over the years, he's had the privilege of working with leaders at companies like HP, Target and Harley-Davidson to solve long term strategy issues while delivering rapid results. Udaya is a frequent speaker on using innovation to drive growth. Prior to Jump, he worked in community and economic development, providing technical assistance in finance, policy, and systems improvement. He teaches at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business and holds a degree in civil engineering, also from Stanford.
Aliza Sherman is a Web pioneer who founded the first woman-owned Internet company - Cybergrrl, Inc. - and the first organization to help women succeed in new media - Webgrrls International. She is a social media innovator and commentator. She speaks around the world about Internet and social media marketing topics. She is the co-founder of Conversify , one of the first social media marketing agencies with over 20-plus years providing high-level, strategic Internet consulting to companies and organizations.
In addition to her client work at Conversify, Aliza is a multimedia content producer, providing forward-thinking content on social media and it’s impact on communications, marketing, online marketing and PR to a variety of media outlets. She is the author of 7 books including The Everything Blogging Book ,Streetwise Ecommerce , and PowerTools for Women in Business . Her 8th book,The Complete Idiots' Guide to Crowdsourcing, will be released in Spring 2011.

Rick Wolk, Assistant Professor, Marketing & Entrepreneurship at University of Alaska Southeast is an educator and an entrepreneur with experience in all aspects of running organizations that strive for management and marketing excellence. Rick has successfully managed business development, sales, marketing, human resources and administration functions; his experience includes P&L responsibility, general management, international business, new product development, and start-ups. He earned his Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and he is currently a PhD student at Leeds Metropolitan University in the U.K. Rick is a member of the Southeast Conference's Economic Development Committee, a member of the TEAM’s advisory board (The Entrepreneur and Mentor Network) and Alaska InvestNet advisory board (and former Executive Director.) Rick is doing research on high growth sustainability entrepreneurship in Alaska, how entrepreneurs can be more financially successful and more ecologically positive. Rick is the advisor and Sam Walton Fellow for UAS’ Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) in top of his teaching responsibilities. When he has some free time, you will most likely find Rick in a kayak, cross-country skiing, or just hanging out with his wife Bobbie Sue.
