“The strongest point of the workshop was the check list on how to prepare a lesson plan. The presenter was very open to answer any questions,” said Ms Mehnaz Zuberi, Coordinator Quality Enhancement Cell sharing her thoughts about the Inquiry-Based Learning workshop held on Monday, July 30 at Happy Home School, Shaheed-e-Millat Road Branch, Karachi. The Workshop was especially requested by the School as part of the Middle School Assessment Framework implementation process.
Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) is an effective approach to instruction which enhances the way a student processes the information discussed in the classroom. This approach actively involves students in the exploration of the content, issues, and questions surrounding a specific concept. It is a form of active learning where progress is assessed by how well the students develop experimental, analytical and critical thinking skills rather than how many facts they have memorized. Because of its effectiveness, this approach has been integrated into the Project Portfolio program within the Middle School Assessment Framework.
“We encourage our participating schools to see it (IBL) as part of project-based learning rather than separately,” said Raana Jilani, conductor of the workshop and Assistant Manager, Middle School Assessment Framework.
Inquiry Based Learning - when appropriately implemented as a classroom strategy for a specified time - can have beneficial outcomes for the students such as:
- Improved information-processing and problem-solving skills;
- Enhanced development of habits of mind;
- Improved conceptual understanding about the growth and relationship between natural and human-designed worlds
Attended by 45 teachers form different campuses of the School, the Workshop received a positive response overall. The participants also appreciated the teacher professional development support provided by AKU-EB. The Workshop was co-facilitated by Dr Amin Rehmani, Manager, Training and Quality Assurance; and Rahim Daudani, Subject Officer, Accounts and Economics.
