Annual Teachers’ Professional Development Workshops:

“By implementing the assessment strategies learnt at the workshop, teachers can familiarize and prepare their students for exams in a better way ... I used to think everyone could create MCQs easily, but now I learned they require technique and thoughtfulness in order to effectively assess student’s understanding …,” said Arshad Baig, Lecturer, Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Gahkuch reflecting on his experience at the end of Annual Teachers’ Professional Development Workshop (ATPDW) held in Gilgit-Baltistan from September 2 through 4, 2012.
The Workshop in Gilgit was part of a series of Annual Teachers Professional Development Workshops (ATPDW), exclusively for AKU-EB Affiliated Schools, conducted across Pakistan in 4 cities including Karachi, Lahore, Sukkur and Gilgit from July through September 2012. A total of 370 teachers from 73 schools all over Pakistan participated to improve upon their teaching strategies and help enhance the learning experiences of their students in classrooms and beyond through effective lesson planning and micro-teaching techniques.

Highlighting the significance of AKU-EB syllabus design, the ATPD Workshops helped teachers to enrich their understanding of how to foster a learning-based environment in their classrooms through implementation of SLOs, assessment techniques and productive feedback to their students.
Discussions in several subject areas covered diverse topics such as:
  • In-depth understanding and application of SLOs
  • Lesson Planning including Micro Lesson Planning
  • Importance and ways of constructive feedback
  • Construction of MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions), CRQs/ERQs (Constructed and Extended Response Questions with Marking Schemes)
  • Importance of learning through social interaction
