PU students decry bike theft incidents
Lahore, Feb 03: Punjab University students staged a protest demonstration and threw traffic out of gear for hours on Wednesday shortly after the police resorted to aerial firing to disperse them.
The students were demanding measures to stop motorcycle theft on the campus.
Dozens of PU students gathered on the Lahore Canal near New Campus underpass after evening to register their protest against the increasing incidents of motorcycle theft on the campus. They also sought proper security for themselves.
The protesters blocked two sides of the road and raised slogans against the university management. There were reports of minor clashes between the police and protesters when the latter refused to clear the road for traffic. Police chased the students and used force to disperse them.
Situation remained tense in the area for more than two hours, forcing the motorists to wait for the ‘drop scene’, witnesses said.
Long queues of vehicles were seen from the New Campus to Ferozepur Road and Johar Town during the protest.
Islami Jamiat Tulaba Punjab University Nazim Zubair Safdar said the students wanted to register a peaceful protest for half an hour against poor security on the campus. He said several motorcycles had been stolen from the university premises for the last one month, but the university administration was not ready to listen to students.
Safdar said police resorted to aerial firing when students were demanding action against the thieves. No road was blocked at that time, he added.
Punjab University Resident Officer-I Javed Sami said IJT blocked the road for traffic without any justification and added that students did not inform the university administration about the motorcycle theft.

UoE syndicate: A meeting of the University of Education’s syndicate called to decide the fate of two faculty members who were terminated by the vice-chancellor on multiple charges, remained inconclusive on Wednesday.
The meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Farhat Saleem discussed in detail a report submitted by the Punjab government’s probe committee comprising two vice-chancellors.
Earlier, the committee had probed the matter and identified the termination of two senior faculty members questionable and abrupt.
The VC argued that she sacked faculty members Dr Anwaarul Rehman Pasha and Dr Shaheen Pasha on charges of unsatisfactory performance, non-compliance, instigating students, and doing politics instead of performing their academic duties.
The syndicate will discuss the report in its next meeting as well. Dawn
PU teacher’s distinction
Lahore: Punjab University Hailey College of Banking & Finance (HCBF) Principal Prof Dr Khawaja Amjad Saeed has presented his paper “Economic Development: A Case Study from Pakistan” at an international conference on Business & Economic Society.
The conference was organised by St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, USA, in January in which scholars from several countries and four continents, including Australia, Asia, Europe and North America participated.
Dr Amjad Saeed’s paper presented five stages of economic development in the world, including the latest one namely ‘New Economy.’ The conference ended with a firm determination that year 2011 should see stabilisation and sustainability in the world and prosperity for people across the board for substantial reduction in poverty and promotion of employment openings in business and economic activities throughout the world.
PU wins award
Lahore: A 45-member students’ team of the Punjab University has won the “Best Team” award at “Tamasha 2011″ programme held at the FAST National University Islamabad and defended its title successfully. The title of this year’s competitions was “Re-brand Pakistan”. The PU students clinched nine first, seven second and four third positions.
Speech, Sufiyana Kalam, sketching, painting, calligraphy, fiction, essay writing, drama, debate and documentary were the features of this year’s competitions. About 20 universities, including FC College University, Gomal University D. I. Khan, Peshawar University, UET, Gujrat University, International Islamic University, FAST National University Karachi & Lahore participated in the competitions.
PU Deputy Advisor Student Affairs M. Zubair Akram led the team while M. Mansha Zahid and Abdul Qadir assisted. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran has congratulated Advisor Student Affairs Iftikhar Ahmad Chaudhry, Deputy Advisor Zubair Akram and all the students and hoped that the students would keep this tradition also in future and earn fame for the varsity.
PU LLB admission
Lahore: The Punjab University Examinations Department has notified that all those candidates who appeared in all subjects in LLB, Part-I and Part-II, Annual Examination 2010 and totally failed, can submit their admission forms with single fee till February 10, 2011 to appear in LLB, Part-I and Part-II, Supplementary Examination 2010, under the new rules, according to a press release here on Wednesday.
PU Pharm-D date sheet
Lahore: The Punjab University Examinations Department has announced the date sheets of Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm-D), Third Professional, Fourth Professional and Final Professional, Annual Exam 2010. According to a press release on Wednesday, Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm-D), Third Professional and Fourth Professional, Annual Exam 2010 will commence from Feb 23 and conclude on March 8 while Pharm-D, Final Professional will commence from March 14 and conclude on March 31, 2011. PU Jhelum Campus discussed
Lahore: Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran chaired a high-level meeting to discuss the establishment of PU Jhelum Campus here on Wednesday.
Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Akhtar, Treasurer Dr Uzma Ikram, Controller Examinations Dr Zahid Karim Khan, deans of faculties, principals of colleges, directors of centres and heads of various departments attended the meeting.
A press release here on Wednesday said the VC appreciated the chief minister Punjab’s step regarding selection of Punjab University for establishing its Jehlum Campus.
He said the PU administration would take every possible step to meet the public and government’s expectations in providing quality higher education to the youth.
He directed early completion of remaining construction work so that classes could be started at Jehlum Campus as soon as possible. He said the youth of Jehlum, Gujjar Khan, Chakwal, Mirpur, Azad Kashmir and districts of complete salt range would be provided latest educational facilities in the areas of information technology, computer science, business administration, commerce, law, zoology, botany and geology.
He stressed the need to upgrade the Teachers’ Evaluation Programme to evaluate performance and improve their teaching capabilities.
He directed the concerned officials to develop meetings with the principals of colleges affiliated with PU so that considerable measures could be taken to resolve the students’ problems there. Earlier, Project Director Sheikh Muhammad Ali briefed in details about the establishment of PU Jehlum Campus.
He told the meeting that the Jehlum Campus will consist of an area of 259 kanals and 17 marlas out of which main building of the campus will cover an area of 149,138 sq ft while faculty members’ residences will cover an area of 63085 sq ft.

BEd woman learns a hard lesson
Attock: A BEd degree holder has been appointed as sanitary worker on daily wages in Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) Attock, it has been learnt.
Syeda Shaiq Tasleem, a mother of two children, had applied for the post due to financial constraints and prolonged unemployment. Ms Tasleem, who is also doing MA in Education as a private candidate, has joined the duty, sources in the TMA said.
However, the TMA has not yet issued the final list of successful candidates even about two weeks after holding interview, causing great disappointment among applicants.
The sources said the delay was due to infighting among some ruling political elements who were using their influence to get their people appointed on the 112 posts of Class IV on regular basis. The posts included sanitary workers and tubewell operators, etc.
A number of candidates on condition of anonymity have already expressed the fear that candidates recommended by politicians would be given preference in the recruitment.
When contacted, TMO Mubarik Ali, who is also chairman of the recruitment committee, confirmed that Syeda Shaiq had been appointed as a sanitary worker on daily wages.
She said she had been offered the job on humanitarian ground and owing to her financial problems, adding the decision on giving her a permanent class IV job had been delayed.
He said the final list of other candidates was being prepared and may be issued at the end of this month.
He refuted the impression of any political interference and said the recruitment would be made in a very transparent and on merit. Dawn
