HEC devolution a blow to higher education

HEC devolution a blow to higher education

LAHORE,: Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences Director General Dr AD Raza Chaudhry has expressed concern over the proposed devolution of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to provinces and observed that it would give a 10-year downward push to the nation.
Dr Chaudhry said the HEC had served as a central organisation to oversee the quality of higher education and research in Pakistan, and promoted the excellence in scientific research and university education. The commission supported higher educational institutions in all possible ways and its efforts were successful and fruitful.
He said the existence of the HEC in present form and with a stronger support from the federal government was essential for the social and economic prosperity of Pakistan.
“The proposed devolution will be a shame for the Pakistan government and a defeat to education and research institutions of the developing nation,” he added.
Dr Chaudhry said the success of his institution owed to the HEC programmes with whose support it has become a great institution of research and advanced studies providing a scientific base to the nation.
He said recently the school was declared emerging regional centre of excellence by a forum of the European Mathematical Society, Unesco and various other international institutions and educational organisations.
Even India’s world famous Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) had praised the success of Pakistan in the field of scientific research which showed that in certain key areas, Pakistan’s progress was indispensable and ahead of India, he added.
