Foreign Minister was the life and soul of the conference

A nine-day ninth annual conference of the Lahore University of Management Sciences Model United Nations (LUMUN) saw an active participation of over 800 student delegates in debates and fun-filled social events and leading them to “Embracing Responsibility, Enabling Change” — the theme of the conference.
The conference, which began last Tuesday, provided students a forum to simulate United Nations’ 13 committees and come up with solutions to complex issues currently being faced by the world.
The conference also hosted a Journalism Forum showcasing a passionate debate that yielded incisive insight into the role of the media in Pakistani society.
The Forum also discussed the ethics of journalism in Pakistan in the wake of commercialism and politicization that had impeded the ability of journalism to serve as a catalyst of positive change.
The LUMUN Social Responsibility Programme had also arranged an event in partnership with CARE Foundation, which aspired to “Deliver, Build and Innovate” by helping less-privileged members of society so as to bring about a positive change.
The event was unique for many reasons. It aimed at filling a gap created by the class and cultural discrimination by allowing the delegates and children from the CARE Foundation to work on art projects or participate as a team in sports activities.
Besides serving as a wonderful learning experience for the children, the event left everyone with a greater sense of responsibility towards their country and the countrymen.
The conference’s closing ceremony on Saturday became enriched with the presence of LUMS alumni Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar as former ambassador Iqbal Ahmed Khan said, “There could not have been a better culmination than being addressed by the foreign minister on the forum of diplomacy.”
Elaborating the conference’s theme, “Embracing Responsibility, Enabling Change”, Ms Khar explained a shift in the foreign policy of Pakistan especially with Afghanistan and India.
“Due to the results of our past mistakes, we are now able to evolve a strategy that has changed our perspectives. We must not be afraid of leading the change,” the foreign minister said.
She highlighted Pakistans achievements in the last five years in the United Nations including achieving a seat in the UNSC and UNHRC.
Focusing on involvement of Pakistan in building bridges of trust with Afghanistan, Ms Khar said the hostility with India had achieved us nothing. “The problems of both countries are mutual, and there exists a need to invest heavily in reconciliation rather than military,” she said.
The foreign minister said Pakistan could not emerge from economic distress on its own and added, “There is a need to emerge as region, which is possible only if we are able to address mutual issues”.
Ms Khar also shared her personal experiences at LUMS with the delegates and talked about how LUMS had brought about a positive change in her life. Relating to LUMUN IX’s motto this year, the foreign minister urged the young people to embrace the responsibility to vote in the next elections and bring a change in the country.
LUMUN-IX Director-General Sarah Ahmed said the conference had successfully achieved its purpose — building bridges of reconciliation and removing gaps of misperception.
Secretary-General Qasim Abidi discussed the success of the conference with the presence of a diverse body of over 800 delegates.
Awards for the best delegates and honourable mentions were given by respective chairs of the committee. The award for the best delegation went to Karachi Grammar School and Lahore School of Economics.
