Career Fair at Government College University draws in thousands of students

LAHORE: Career Fair 2013 at the Government College University (GCU) Lahore on Thursdayreceived an enthusiastic response as thousands of university graduates and final year students flocked to the fair to explore employment opportunities in reputed international and national organisations, besides seeking information about the available foreign scholarships.
As many as 40 noted organisations including Pakistan International Airline (PIA), WWF Pakistan, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Qarshi Industries set up their stalls at the Career Fair organised by the GCU Career Guidance and Placement Centre and provided the students information about the available positions in their organisations. The companies’ executives also conducted on-campus interviews to shortlist the candidates. Cellular companies and a couple of media houses also set up their stalls where they interviewed the students for the posts of copy editors, anchors and reporters.
However, the stalls of United States Education Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) remained the centre of attraction at the Fair, where students were briefed about the various foreign scholarships and also guided about the procedures, requirements and eligibility criteria. “More than 1,000 students of GCU have reported to my stall and received relevant information from the foundation representatives,” USEFP Education Adviser Lubna Anwar proudly said.
GCU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman and NETSOL Chief Executive Officer Salim Ghauri were the chief guests at the Career Fair, while GCU Director Research, Innovation and Commercialisation Prof Dr Muhammad Zakria Butt, Director Facilities Yousaf Bashir and Placement Officer Hassaan-ul-Haq were also present.
The Vice Chancellor visited stalls of all companies and discussed with the company executives their recruitment polices and criteria. Prof Rahman said that GCU did not only concentrate on theoretical teaching but also laid a particular stress on the confidence and character building of its students, so that they can perform exceptionally well in their professional lives.
Talking to the media, students said that it was the responsibility of every university to help and guide its students in starting their professional career. However, they lamented that very few colleges and universities held career fairs for their outgoing students.
Rana Saif, an economics student, demanded the government to hold career fairs at the national level where foreign companies are also invited to employ the talented youth of Pakistan.
Talking about the Career Fair, GCU Placement Officer Hassaan-ul-Haq said the fair was organised every year to build a strong foundation for professional career of students so that they could excel in market. He hoped that more than a hundred students would get jobs through the career fair this year.
