13-year-old Satyam Kumar from Bihar cracks IIT JEE 2013, secures 679th rank

A teen-aged prodigy from Bihar has proved that his success at the highly competitive Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) last year was no fluke.
Satyam Kumar, the 13-year-old son of a farmer from Bhojpur district, has cracked the IIT-JEE again this year with an impressive all-India rank of 679. This is despite the fact that the examination was held in an altogether different format this year.

At the age of 12-and-a-half years, Satyam had got the all-India rank of 8,137 in 2012 and was not happy with his results. He had then resolved to appear in the examination again to improve his ranking.
Since then, he had been studying at Kota in Rajasthan to pursue his goal. He hit the bulls eye when the results of the IIT-JEE were announced on Friday.

Satyam said that he would like to pursue computer engineering either from Mumbai or Kanpur IIT. He said that he would like wants to excel in the field of information technology while pursuing his course at the IIT.  "I also want to develop something on the lines of the social networking site Facebook," he said.
The young prodigy, however, has also set his sights on bureaucracy and would also like to qualify in the civil services examination in future.
Satyam, who was at his village when the results were announced, said that he would like to teach the children of his home district in his spare time in future.
The news of his success brought joy to his family and village in Bihar. "We are all proud of his achievements," his father Sidhnath Singh said. "He was determined to improve his ranking."
Singh, a farmer based in Bakhorapur village near Ara, said that his son had done something special at such a young age. "His hard work and determination paid off."
Born on July 20, 1999, Satyam had become the youngest student to crack the IIT examination last when he had broken the record of Sahal Kaushik from Delhi who had achieved the distinction at the age of 14 in 2014. Satyam remains the youngest successful candidate even after his second attempt this year.

He had appeared in the examination even before his class XII results were declared last year.

Satyam, who gives credit to his family and teachers for his success for constantly motivating him, was brought to Patna from his village for his initial studies  by his parents at the age of six. Since he was excellent in studies, he was subsequently taken to Kota by one of his uncles Ram Pukar Singh. Initially, there were some problems in his admission  because of his age but he surprised the teachers of his school with his talent. He passed class XII from there with flying colours.
His uncle Ram Pukar, who stays at Kota, said that he had taken his nephew to Kota after seeing his aptitude for studies. "He was allowed to take the Class X and Class XII examinations at the age of 10 and 12 under special permission from the local education board," he said.

Singh said that Satyam followed his regular study schedule since last year to crack the IIT-JEE. "He used to go to bed at 10 at night and get up at 5:00 am every day and concentrated on his studies," he said. "But he was focused in his mission all the way."
