Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, for the second week in a
row, left a game with an injury. But this time he couldn't lead his team
to a win when he returned.
Auburn continued is resurrection Saturday, upsetting the No. 7 Aggies 45-41 in College Station, Texas. The Tigers got a 5-yard touchdown run from Tre Mason with 1:19 to play go ahead by four points. Manziel and the Aggies (5-2, 2-2 SEC), who had three timeouts at their disposal, took the field and immediately marched into Auburn territory. But the Tigers sacked him twice for losses of 8 and 22 yards on two of the game's final three plays.
Manziel had left Saturday's game against Auburn in the fourth quarter after injuring his right shoulder on a running play. Auburn's Nick Marshall threw for 236 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 100 yards and two more scores for Auburn (6-1, 3-1), which lost 63-21 to the Aggies last season.
As was the case last Saturday, when he was briefly sidelined against Mississippi, Manziel returned to the Aggies' offense after missing only a single series. He proceeded to lead Texas A&M on a 12-play, 75-yard drive that he ended with a 1-yard TD run. The touchdown gave the Aggies a 41-38 lead with 5:05 to play.
For the game, Manziel threw for 454 yards and four touchdowns and ran for a fifth TD, while also throwing two interceptions.
The injury occurred as Manziel lowered his shoulder near Auburn's goal line, looking to gain extra yards with A&M ahead 31-24 with roughly 14 minutes left to play in the final quarter. Manziel was tackled by a pair of defense, falling forward with his weight on his right, throwing shoulder. The Aggies would eventually hit a field goal to take a 34-24 lead.
Manziel stood up after the hit and took several steps toward A&M's sideline, gesturing toward either the Aggies' coaching or medical staff, before falling to the turf.
According to a report by CBS, which televised the game, A&M's medical staff took time looking at Manziel's shoulder, elbow and arm, and that Manziel engaged in a lengthy conversation with the team doctor.
Manziel
was never taken to the locker room, which might mark a more serious
injury – one that would demand an x-ray, for instance – but was escorted
to an area beneath the team bench, out of sight from the crowd, where
A&M has a separate training table and area.
A&M worked on Manziel there, according to CBS, and eventually brought him a football for him to attempt a pass before reentering the game.
