This year the graduating seniors in the French-Language Section of Le
Lycée Français de Los Angeles achieved an unprecedented success in the
prestigious worldwide Baccalauréat examinations. Mrs. Clara-Lisa Kabbaz,
President of the private, bilingual and bicultural school, today
announced the results for both the traditional French Baccalauréat exam
(le bac), and the new French-American Baccalaureate (FAB). A total of 19
students took either the traditional bac or the FAB.
“Le Lycée has a history of 100 percent passage on le bac, an exam that has been administered for generations at French schools throughout France and around the world. What makes this year’s results so remarkable are a series of extraordinary achievements, including:
• 16-20 (mention très bien) = A+ / Summa Cum Laude
• 14-15.9 (mention bien) = A / Magna Cum Laude
• 12-13.9 (mention assez bien) = A- / Cum Laude
• 10-11.9 (passing) = B/B- / passing
“To put our students’ scores into context,” said Mrs. Kabbaz, “of the more than 70 percent of students in the United States who pass the bac or FAB with honors, an average of 15 percent achieve the highest score of mention très bien. In addition to the 42 percent mention très bien that Le Lycée graduates earned, 21 percent achieved mention bien, 15 percent achieved mention assez bien, and the remaining 16 percent passed.”
The French-American Baccalaureate, also known as the FAB, is a new exam born from a partnership between the French Ministry of Education and the American College Board, which administers both the SAT and the AP (Advanced Placement) exams. This special diploma recognizes mastery of the French language and culture, as well as of the English language and American culture. Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles is one of only three schools in the world to offer the FAB. Eleven Lycée students took the FAB for the first time this year.
In a letter to Mr. Dominique Petauton, Head of Le Lycée’s Raymond & Esther Kabbaz High School, Janine M. Farhat, Senior International Specialist of The College Board wrote, “Congratulations on the superb performance of your 11 students in the 2012 Franco-American Baccalaureate (FAB) program. The jury was most impressed with the qualifications of your students. In particular, one of your students received the highest score in North America among all students in the FAB, OIB and regular bac. Clearly you and your teachers at Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles are doing something right!”
According to Mr. Petauton, who is also a bac and FAB examiner, “These exam results reveal more than the caliber of our students and the rigor of their scholastic careers at Le Lycée. This success highlights the exceptional value of the academic preparation for the FAB, which prepares students to do extremely well in both the European Baccalaureate topics as well as the American Advanced Placement subjects.”
“The opportunity these students have to excel and become truly literate in more than one culture is a rare gift,” adds Mrs. Kabbaz. “Most of these students began at our Lycée in their early education years, and their families made the commitment to pursue the French curriculum all the way through to graduation from our high school. These extraordinary graduating seniors will attend Princeton, Stanford, UCLA, Cornell, McGill University, and Franklin Olin College of Engineering, among other schools; students have also been accepted to Paris’ renowned Sciences Po & Columbia University dual BA program, and other French Grandes Ecoles.”

- Nearly half of these seniors come from non-French-speaking households, where no French is spoken at home and have been enrolled at Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles since preschool or kindergarten.”
