Aga Khan University (AKU)

The Aga Khan University offers various undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Frequent collaboration with leading academic institutions like Harvard University in the United States and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden elevate the AKU education and research programmes. The result of these partnerships is a modern curriculum and a higher standard of education in all programmes offered.
Undergraduate Programmes
The undergraduate programmes offered at AKU are:
The Faculty of Arts and Sciences in Karachi, Pakistan, and Arusha, Tanzania, cultivates future leaders who are sympathetic, self-aware, and committed to a deeper understanding of humanity; leaders who honour the traditions they come from and who can transform them into new patterns and practices to help their communities succeed.
MBBS Programme
The Medical College offers a five-year undergraduate programme leading to the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The programme is designed to equip students with appropriate knowledge, skills, attitude, values and behaviours necessary to understand and influence factors that affect the health of individuals and of communities. The curriculum conforms to the requirements of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), which is the registering body in Pakistan.
Nursing and Midwifery

Nursing:
Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programme are eligible for licensure as Registered Nurses (RN) and also earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.

Midwifery:
The School of Nursing and Midwifery is offering a diploma in midwifery at three hospitals in Karachi located in Karimabad, Kharadar and Garden as well as one in Hyderabad.

ADMISSIONS
MBBS Programme
Each year 100 students are admitted to the MBBS Programme of AKU. Admissions are based on individual merit and leadership potential. Candidates are assessed on several criteria including scholastic achievements, extracurricular achievements, participation in social work and productive usage of time. Students may apply from anywhere in the world and there are no quotas, reserved seats or admissions against donations.
Candidates Applying from Pakistani Education Systems
Candidates prepared in Pakistan or overseas who have successfully completed or are in the process of completing their HSC/graduate/postgraduate education and meet with the eligibility criteria may apply. Candidates must present qualifications which are appropriate to the system of education in which they have been prepared. 
Pakistani Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Education
Achievement of at least 60% in the HSC pre‑medical examination is necessary for applying to the Medical College. 
British or equivalent Advanced Level Certificates of Education
At the Ordinary Secondary School level, candidates should have satisfactorily completed at least six subjects including English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The O Level grade sheet must accompany the application.
For candidates applying from Pakistan with the Advanced Level of the General Certificate of Education or equivalent, three or more subjects are required with a minimum grade B in each of the three subjects. The subjects must include Chemistry, Biology and Physics.
Provisional Candidates
For provisional candidates, shortlisting, interview and ranking by the Admission Committee will take place on a provisional basis while the HSC scores are awaited. Admissions for candidates selected with a provisional status will be confirmed only if the Advanced Level of the General Certificate of Education or equivalent is according to the minimum eligibility requirements specified are met and are submitted within the published deadline.
The AKU Admission Test
All candidates resident in Pakistan, irrespective of the curriculum or system of education followed, and candidates pursuing the Pakistani system of education overseas, are required to give the Aga Khan University Admission Test.
The Admission Test includes an English language component, a section on Science and Mathematical Reasoning and a section on Science Achievement comprising questions in biology, chemistry and physics. Candidates passing the written test are called for an interview. The written test and interview are of equal marks.

How to Apply

Applications for admission are accepted for the first year MBBS class only. These will be accepted until March 29 to April 11, 2013. Applications received after the closing date will not be processed.

The Medical College application package may be obtained, in person by cash payment, from the Admissions Office on the Stadium Road campus in Karachi.
Submitting an Application
An application for admission must be submitted on the prescribed application form. Candidates are required to write their name on the application form as stated on their Secondary School Certificate.
The application must only include the following:
1.  Attested copies of mark sheets/transcripts as applicable
2.  The Admit card
3.  The Application Fee 

The non-refundable application fee for candidates applying from Pakistan is:
Early bird fee March 4 to 28, 2013:  (will be announced in March, check AKU website)
Last week between March 29 to April 11 ,2013 :  (will be announced in March)

The payment can be made by pay order or demand draft in favour of "The Aga Khan University"

Funding
Admission to any of the academic programmes at Aga Khan University is entirely based on merit. The application process evaluates prospective students on a need-blind basis, so no student is denied admission based on his or her financial situation. Only need based financial assistance is provided.
Upon acceptance into one of the academic programmes, the University works with students who need financial assistance to help them finance the cost of their education. The Financial Assistance Programme aims to assist students who have limited financial resources to support the cost of their education.  Currently, Financial Assistance is awarded in the form of a combination of grant-in-aid and student loan in Pakistan.
The student loan portion of the Financial Assistance Programme is interest free while the grant-in-aid portion is not repayable.

Accommodation
Accommodation, both on-campus and off-campus, for outstation undergraduate students is arranged in hostels managed by the University. These hostels provide single and shared, non-air-conditioned, furnished accommodation and a limited number of twin-sharing flats for women. Preference in room allocation is given to those from outside Karachi. The women's hostel is situated at the University campus.
There is limited on-campus accommodation for male students. Female students joining the graduate programmes may apply for on-campus accommodation.

A fee is charged for on-campus accommodation. Single room charges are Rs7, 000 per month, payable in advance.  Meals may be purchased separately from the University's cafeteria and tuck shop.
